Superintendent’s Message

Years ago, I took a graduate-level course in school leadership at Trinity Western University. My professor said something I still remember: “People over programs!”

His point was this: Christian schools don’t exist because they have the best programs, win championship sports banners, or send the most students to university.  Those may be great outcomes from time to time, but they’re not why we’re here. VCS exists because of the people, the students, God leads into our community.

Programs don’t make a great school – people do.

Great programs are important, of course, but they need to serve our mission, not become our mission. Our mission is all about aiming the hearts, hands, and minds of students to Jesus, and equipping them to be impactful citizens as they follow the Lord’s plan for their lives. We desire that the Holy Spirit fills their hearts and transforms students to do his good works in this world, with biblical excellence.

That’s why we focus on running a wide range of courses and programs for students, not because we can be everything for everyone (we can’t), but because God created each student uniquely. Every student is gifted differently; some will excel in science, others in literature, art, athletics, or even fishing! A school that focuses too singularly on a specific program is at risk of making that program its idol.

I love our community not because of the programs we run or the great things we might do, but because of the people who are part of it. At VCS, I see people living out their faith by serving other people. People who, in response to what Jesus has already done for them, care deeply about supporting the flourishing of others. It’s a beautiful and compelling picture for me, as both a superintendent and a dad.

Ten years after leaving VCS, most students might not remember much about the programs we offer from K-12 or the games they won or lost. I suspect they’ll remember the people who shared these experiences with them.

They’ll remember a staff member who knew and cared for them when they were struggling. Parents who cheered them on. The friends who stuck with them through years of ups and downs. They’ll remember that they felt like they belonged.

And most importantly, we pray they’ll always remember that God knows them, loves them, and invites them to follow him in every area of their lives.

Welcome to the VCS Community.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Tinsley
