Thanksgiving Chapel: We are celebrating! Well over 80 years ago, a small group of Dutch Christian immigrants began building their dream for the first Christian school in Vancouver and the first of its kind in B.C. Vancouver Christian School was the culmination of that dream and has been in operation for 70 years! Although we are not making huge splashes about this (last year, we did a lot of celebrating already), we will be having an all-school chapel on October 11th at 11:30 with the theme, “Cultivating Community for the Past 70 Years.” You are welcome to join us. Space will be limited, but there will be some standing room at the sides and back of the gym.

You Asked!  (Our Q and A section) Are all VCS teachers certified?

Yes!  This is a requirement from the Ministry of Education, whether you are in public or independent education. All teachers must be registered with the Teacher Regulation Branch.  Like most schools, almost all of our teachers have graduated from UBC or TWU or SFU in education. And like almost all schools, we have a few teachers who may have graduated with a degree in education from outside the country such as the US or Taiwan; they too must qualify for certification from the Teacher’s Regulation Branch (TRB). In very small instances, schools can seek a Letter of Permission from the TRB to teach a restricted subject such as Biblical Studies or music. A great example is Miss Krebs, our amazing strings teacher; she has a Masters in violin performance from UBC, but does not have an education degree. She has received permission to teach Strings at VCS, and has earned a teaching certificate. VCS teachers have a wide range of specialized training from degrees in biology to music to math to French and a number of them have completed or are working on their masters’ degrees.
